Best 29er under $1000: Four 2012 Models Reviewed
Scott Scale Comp Bike

With summer coming, it's often the perfect time to look for and buy a new bike. Mountain bikes in particular are very popular, but how can you know which model to get? How can you be sure that you're spending money wisely? After all, there's a lot of different brands out there, and the prices vary a lot. The simple fact is that the features and materials of these vehicles will change the price and make a big difference whether it ends up being the bike for you or not. Usually when you go out to look at the various options, they are categorized by wheel size to make it easier to contrast and compare. For the best 29er, here's four 2012 models reviewed:

If you want a 29 inch wheel bike, then one fairly low cost model is the Haro Flightline 29 Sport Hardtail Mountain Bike 2012, which is a brand new 2012 model from Haro, yet is still available at the fairly low cost of $629. Here you get a very solid vehicle with a lightweight aluminium frame which gives it the support, solidity and performance you expect in a good bike. The SR Suntour travel fork comes with a preload adjustment and lockout, allowing you maximum flexibility, and finally the Tektro Draco hydraulic brakes are state of the art. If you're willing to spend a bit more however you can look at the Marin Alpine Trail 29er Bike, which is another 2012 model from Marin. This one features a double-butted aluminium frame, a RockShox XC28 suspension fork, Shimano shifters and Tektro Draco hydraulic disc brakes. All of this gives you more brand name parts and a better guarantee that you'll get high performance for $849.

On the high end, there's the Novara Ponderosa 29er Bike, which is a 2012 bike from Novara and features a butted aluminium frame, SR Suntour XCR fork, Sturdy Shimano Deore/SLX 27-speed drivetrain, Shimano Deore mechanical disc brakes, Flashy double-walled Weinmann rims and WTB Pure V Race saddle. So as you can see, for $949, you pay for both brand name parts and some extra bling on your bike. Finally, there's also the Scott Scale 29er Comp Bike, the last of the 2012 bikes we're going to look at. This one has a similar lightweight, butted aluminum frame, SR Suntour XCR 29 LO suspension fork, All-Shimano drivetrain, Tektro Draco hydraulic disc brakes and Schwalbe Rocket Ron tires. Here again you pay for the brand name parts along with a cooler look for the overall bike, and this one comes out at $999.

So as you can see, there's a lot of choice and many models out there. The price varies a lot, but usually what you end up paying for is brand name parts, which in turn help give you higher quality and performance, along with the look. Some bikes have very nice designs with extra items added just for the appearance, and of course that factors into the price, but it's up to you to decide how much you're willing to pay for your next bike.

4 Things You Should Know Before You Buy a Mountain Bike
Mountain Bike

When you want to buy yourself a bicycle, there's a lot of models, brands and types to choose from. It used to be that a bike was very simple, and they all looked the same. But in the past decades, the whole industry got more specialized, and as such, the buying choice becomes harder when you look at all the features they offer. If you're set on a mountain bike, a type of vehicle that's mostly made for off-road treks, then there's still a lot of characteristics you should look at before buying. Here's 4 things you should know before you buy your next mountain bike:

First, you need to know whether a mountain bike is really the type of bike you want, over a road bike or even a cruiser bike. The main difference here is the way the frame is made, how wide the wheels are, and how the grips are made. The point of a mountain bike, as the name implies, is to go off in rough terrain. This doesn't mean that it won't work on asphalt roads. In fact, many people simply default to mountain bikes as all purpose vehicles. That works fine, but remember road bikes will be more efficient on paved roads, so if you never intend to go outside the city, you may want to reconsider. Another thing to consider is the type of mountain bike to get. There's downhill, cross country, freeride, and so on. Each type has it's own set of features, and performs slightly better in particular activities. For professionals, or someone who intends to do competitions, this is very important, because every little detail, the exact way the bike is made, will influence performance. But if you're just looking for a recreational vehicle, then a good cross country bike is usually great for most uses.

When you start looking at the various models, you will right away notice how varied the prices are. This is based on many things. First, the quality of the materials used. Quality and durability varies a lot between brands and models, and while you may think every bike is pretty much the same, the materials used in constructing the frame, for example, will greatly impact how reliable the vehicle is when turning, going up and down slopes, and so on. Also, the chain and sprocket are the two parts that break the most often in a bike, and having high quality parts here makes a huge difference. Suspension is another feature that many forget about. This isn't a car, with a full suspension system, but high end bikes do have a decent suspension which provides a much more comfortable ride. Finally, not all bikes provide the same performance. Some have a bigger array of speeds, for example, which allows it to go faster and perform better. This will typically be factored into the price, and you pay for what you get.

Overall, getting a mountain bike can be simple if all you need is a recreational vehicle, but if you care about comfort, performance and reliability, these little details are all things that should be checked before you buy, and you should make sure you get quality and durability for your money. If you're willing to spend more, you can get a bike that not only looks great, but performs as well, and will last you for years to come.
